On Saturday, May 19th, the Young Democrats Movement kicked-off their organization with a party in Wilmington. Joining the 90 guests, were State Treasurer Jack Markell, Insurance Commissioner Matt Denn, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons and Council President Paul Clark.

Founders Tim McBride, Helen Boyer (co-presidents), and Read Scott (vice president) recruited students from numerous area high schools, and even some from middle school, to hear directly from their elected officials. The Young Democrats proved they know how to get people to show up - combining making a difference and having a blast doing it.

State Treasurer Jack Markell offered encouragement to get further involved, “with global warming eroding our ice caps, a global war eroding our security, and a global economy eroding our jobs” it is increasingly important to be engaged in politics, he said. Referencing John Mayer’s pop hit, Markell said this generation should not be waiting on the world to change, because “that day is now, and we have to notice what is going on around us.”

The Young Democrats Movement was founded in January of 2007 to achieve three main initiatives: to increase youth volunteerism in Delaware Democratic campaigns, to inform and educate young voters, and finally, to breed, not only the next generation of voters, but the next generation of leaders, whether in business, government or serving on state party committees in their local districts.
